New Chef cooks up a feast!

A lot has been written in the press recently about children's diet and how day nurseries in particular need to improve on the foods they are offering young children. Here at Head Start Healthy Eating has always been a priority and care has always been taken to ensure that, under consultation with nutritionaists and professional chefs, the food children enjoy is also healthy. However the menu's have been developed even further! Based on the new government guidelines for under fives, our delicious menu's include turkey meatballs, root vegetable and lentil cassreole, bean enchiladas and haddock and spinach pasta - to name but a few! All meals are cooked using fresh fruit, vegetables and meat, we do not use processed foods other than the occasional tin of baked beans to go on toast at breakfast time. In addition to main meals the children tuck into two snacks a day which consist of a carbohydrate such as crackers, oat or rice cakes, jamaican bun or bagels, with fresh fruit or a vegie bowl (cucumber, sweet peppers, carrot batons and cherry tomatoes). We use the Tot It Up food calculator to check that every day our menu's provide exactly the right nutrients and calories to ensure the children who attend the nursery get a good balance to foods to help them lead a healthy lifestyle now and in the future.
